The Independent Association of Prep Schools is the professional association for Headteachers of the leading 600 independent prep schools in the UK and worldwide.

Modern prep schools offer a superb standard of education for pupils, balancing traditional values with leading edge teaching and learning. Far from the traditional cliche of old-fashioned uniforms, rigid discipline and academic rigour, one of the key strengths of IAPS is the wide variety of schools within its membership. All strive to deliver excellence in education but they each have their own ethos with an unrivaled range of opportunities in sport, music, modern and classical languages, art, drama, science, technology and the early years.

Whether you are looking for a single-sex or co-ed school, day or boarding, one with a particular religious affliliation or one that provides special educational provision and facilities, there is an IAPS school for you.

Why we chose a prep school

“We chose an independent prep school for our children as we believe the facilities, sport and other opportunities will give our children the best all-round education.  The work ethos at an independent prep school builds the children’s confidence and creates a ‘can do’ attitude.”

How do you ensure…

The brightest future for your child?

How can you make sure your children learn those vital life skills that will help them stand out from the crowd and give them the brightest possible future?

Initiative, perseverance, problem solving, determination, originality, good judgement and independent thought – these are just some of the hidden secrets of success that can make a huge difference to young people while growing up and when entering further education and careers.

As parents, choosing the right school for your child is a great start. However, there’s also heaps you can do at home to help your child develop these characteristics. In The Bright Stuff, leading child education expert C. J. Simister offers a treasure trove of imaginative, playful and above all fun games and activities which can be used to preserve and enhance your child’s potential. She’ll show you how even making tiny changes to the way you speak and respond to your child can have a powerful impact.

All the games are designed to fit in with everyday life, involve little or no preparation and are ideal for keeping children amused in spare moments. A wealth of advice is offered for any parent interested in finding out more about how to nurture intellectual character.

“If my parents had had this goldmine of a book, I’d be a brighter and happier person. Buy it, read it and sprinkle your child’s life with its wisdom.” Professor Guy Claxton, author and Co-Director of the Centre of Real-World Learning, University of Winchester

“A practical handbook for parents about encouraging their children to be original and daring – when it makes sense. Many of those I most admire have few formal qualifications, but do exhibit all the qualities that are the focus of C. J. Simister’s book. As a parent and a risk-taker, I applaud her work.”

Luke Johnson, entrepreneur, Financial Times columnist, Chairman of Channel 4 and the RSA

“A really excellent resource for parents looking for imaginative ways to illuminate young minds. I will be using it with my own children.” Dr Stephen Law, author and Editor of the journal of the Royal Institute of Philosophy

“This is a super book – no sweeping generalisations, easy assumptions or join-the-dot prescriptions, just damn good advice and ideas.” Dr Barry Hymer, author and educationalist.
